Nutritional Information about Nuts

For information on omega-3 fatty acids, a Google search with "omega-3 fats" and walnuts will bring up many entries, some of which are reputable. However, like everything on the Internet, it is sometimes difficult to distinguish between wacky and misleading claims from genuine information.

Excellent (and reputable) information is available from sites such as:

  • Better Health Channel: quality assured information from the Victorian Government

  • Nuts for Life site: This is site developed by the Australian Nut Industry Council. It  has a wide range of reputable information for health professionals and the general public about the health and nutritional benefits of a variety of nuts (see also local contact information below).

The nutritional profile for walnuts from the Nuts for Life site can be opened from this link.

See this page for direct links to research on the health effects of nuts on the Nuts for Life web site.

  • Information from the US Department of Agriculture web site on the nutrient content of nuts has been tabulated here (see links on right). The information is presented on the USDA site for each nut type individually. We have combined them into a single table for ease of comparison.
These pages tend to be of a more technical nature and are aimed at health professionals but will be of interest to anyone who would like to have a detailed look at the the properties of different types of nuts on the market.

For anything related to health and medicine, a completely reputable site is the US National Library of Medicine "Entrez" search site. This site has indexed information from scientifically reviewed journals only and while some can be heavy going, a little perseverance can yield valuable insights.
