Walnuts not immune to Drought and Frost
Walnut plantations across Victoria and Tasmania have suffered
varying degrees of frost damage in September and October and there may be
more frosts to come.
The unusually late frosts are just part of the drought,
being due to low humidity in the air and the consequent lack of clouds at
might to reduce radiation of heat from the ground.
This is combined with a time were many irrigators are
facing lower allocations of water for their trees.
It will be weeks or months before we know whether the
industry has suffered a serious setback due to these
extreme climatic conditions.
AWIA would appreciate it if members could keep the
Executive informed as to any developments in their region and whether any
intervention or lobbying from AWIA on their behalf could be of any
value.
